PitchCar

The rules for PitchCar couldn’t be simpler – on your turn you flick – or, in the parlance of the game, pitch – your race car around the track. The game plays 2-8 and is probably best with more rather than less.

PitchCar comes with a modular track (with rails) that you can set up in a variety of ways (for the very keen there are also expansions to be had). The cars are flat wooden discs, and the rules are as follows: pitch your car. If it overturns, goes off the track, or knocks another car off the track, then it returns to its starting position and your turn is over. If your pitch is successful, your turn also ends – but with your car making some kind of progress. If your car is awkwardly positioned at the start of your turn you’re allowed to move it sideways to A. give your finger room to pitch and B. give your car room to not plough into a car immediately ahead of it.

That’s it! Pitch your cars around for an agreed number of laps, and the winner, as they say, is the winner. And be aware that using the rails to ‘roll’ your cars around the corners can get you rather far with a well-timed pitch…

Sam says

Although many adults enjoy it, for some reason this doesn't grab me. With a flicking game like Cube Quest there's a lot of inherent humour: although the game is a battle, half the fun is things going wrong. When they go wrong in PitchCar it feels slightly exasperating! Combined with a limited enthusiasm for racing cars in a circle, PitchCar ends up scratching no itches for me. But I don't dislike it, and my boys enjoyed it a lot when they were younger.

The guru's verdict

  • Take That!

    Take That!

There's no opportunity for targeting but younger players may find that a duff bit of pitching frustrates.

  • Fidget Factor!

    Fidget Factor!

    Very low.

  • Brain Burn!

    Brain Burn!

    None.

  • Again Again!

    Again Again!

There's no way PitchCar can play the same way twice. You can set it up and pack it away a lot faster than electronic car-racing games as well.
